Perhaps it once opened the front door of the villa. Wealthy Romans were keen to protect their homes from thieves just like people do today.
Who might have used it, and what they would have seen when they went inside?
It was buried in damp soil for nearly 2000 years and is very rusty. The rust will be treated by a metals conservator to preserve it for the future.
