Overview

Create a tactile 3D collage of Sunny Sands including real sand, shells three dimensional arches and lots of holidaymakers.

Include deck chairs, dinghies, people swimming and paddling, making sand castles and eating ice cream.

You can base it on a particular period 1950s to 1980s (using historic postcards for inspiration) or how it is today. Create a soundscape of seaside sounds to accompany it.

Introduction

Use Learn with Objects 18: Folkestone in 1949 as the starting point.

Where have the children in the painting been?
Are there any clues in the picture?

Show them the black and white photo of Sunny Sands. Ask them if anyone recognises this place. There are some clues in the background. When do they think the photo dates from?

Ask if any of the children have been to Sunny Sands (or another beach location). Ask them about their experiences.

Ask the children to research the history of Sunny Sands, or other beaches in Folkestone, Sandgate or Hythe.

Inform the class that they are going to make a beach collage, inspired by their research.

Ask them if they know what a collage is and look at some examples.

Mention that they are going to use natural and recycled materials, including beach finds like sand, dried seaweed, small pieces of driftwood and small shells.

These can either be collected by the children (on family outings or a class visit to the beach) or supplied by the teacher.

Discuss what the content of the collage might be and how it can be made.

Children create their beach collages, including real sand, shells, deck chairs, dinghies, people swimming and paddling, making sand castles and eating ice cream.

If Sunny Sands you could include the arches at the top of the beach with families sheltering under them, and others walking along the prom above their heads!

It could be based it on a particular period, say 1950s to 1980s (using historic postcards for inspiration) or how it is today.

Create a soundscape of seaside sounds to accompany it, using free to use sounds software on your school computer.
