Use Learn with Objects Anglo-Saxons 1: Dover Hill to introduce the Anglo-Saxon cemetery to the class on the whiteboard. Start with it as a mystery. Discuss with them what they think the site is, and some of the different mystery finds.
You can also look at some of the other entries based around finds from this site.
Inform the class that they are reporters for the prestigious Folkestone Herald newspaper in 1907. Their exciting task is to research and write a newspaper article about the sensational finds at Dover Hill, using the material on the Learn with Objects website
They should inform their readers about what’s been found, and some of the more exciting finds.
Discuss local newspapers, and their importance in Edwardian times and today. What jobs do people who work on local newspapers do?
Look at some copies of old Folkestone newspapers on the whiteboard and discuss and research how they were printed.
The junior reporters should include quotes from one or more of the following: Mr A. E. Nichols (the Borough Engineer in charge of the dig), a member of his dig team or some excited visitors.
Children might even ‘hot seat’ a teacher playing the role of one of these characters, jotting down some of the things they say, in their reporters’ notebooks to include in the article.
