The cliffs and Downs around Folkestone are home to several rare species of butterflies and moths, which feed off the chalk-loving flowers. This 1923 painting of the Downs above Sandgate shows ideal habitat.
In Victorian times (and well into the 20th century) butterfly collecting was a popular hobby. In summer, collectors could be seen with their nets, searching for rare species, which were mounted in specimen boxes for display.
Many were given to museums including Folkestone. They are now valuable reference collections.
Today butterflies and moths are protected.
