Cabinets of Curiosity activity 9: shout out for Folkestone Museum
Pupils explore how news was spread in the past and today, by investigating the role of the Folkestone Town Crier. They then create and deliver a physical or digital Shout Out for Folkestone Museum inspired by an object or story at the museum on the Learn with Objects website.

Look at Learn with Objects A Cabinet of Curiosities 17: Oyez, Oyez, Oyez! Discuss with the children who this character might be.
- What clues do his clothes give us?
- What’s he holding in his hand?
- What’s tucked under his arm?
Ask the children to find out more about him at A Cabinet of Curiosities 17: Oyez, Oyez, Oyez! and to report back.
Discuss how news travelled and was spread in the past, and today. Ask the children to imagine they are the Folkestone Town Crier today, and they’ve been asked to give a Shout Out about Folkestone Museum to encourage families to visit.
The children visit Folkestone Museum or the Folkestone Museum website to find out about all the exciting things you can do there.
They research information and images about a favourite object or story from Folkestone Museum, using content and images on the Learn with Objects website.
Ask children to consider the following:
- What format will it be?
- How can you make it exciting?
- Is there a hook that will grab people’s interest?
- Is there a great photo or a short piece of film you can use?
- What information will you need to include?
The Shout Out can be delivered as a traditional Town Crier performance to the rest of the class, and/or as a blog, vlog or other digital format hosted on the school and/or museum website.
