Master Collection activity 1d: gondolas and other boats
Pupils investigate gondolas and other types of boat inspired by lots of different examples in the Master Collection.
They explore the factors that influence their design, then have a go at creating their own model boat.
Learning objectives
Increased knowledge and understanding of different types of boats and how their design is affected by the building materials available, their intended use, local environment and method of propulsion.

KS1-3 Design technology (design a working model boat)
KS1-2 History (history of transport)
Ask pupils to compare the gondola with boats and ships in other Master Collection images:
- Gaetano Dura, Pescatori
- Gioacchino La Pira, The Harbour, Naples
- Unknown artist, Trieste Harbour
- Samuel Prout, Fishermen unloading their catch
- Why are their shapes different?
- How are they propelled?
- What is their environment like?
Design a working model boat inspired by one of those in the Master Collection. Pupils can create their boat from natural or recycled materials and should think about the following questions.
- What materials will you use and why?
How will you make it watertight?
Where will the passengers or cargo go?
How will it be propelled?
How can you make your design stable so it doesn’t sink in a storm?
What other factors do you need to consider in your design?
