When the railway was extended to Folkestone in 1843, the town started to grow quickly as a holiday resort.
For more than 100 years after that, most visitors arrived by train.
Fascinating fact
The Foord Viaduct was designed by Victorian engineer Sir William Cubitt. It was completed in 1844.
At over 100 feet tall, it is the world’s highest arched brick viaduct.
