Seaside Holidays activity 13: charabanc tours and a trip to Boulogne

Learning objectives

Knowledge and understanding of seaside holidays, different kinds of transport including charabancs and cross-Channel steamers, geography of East Kent and foreign travel. Art and design skills creating an advertising poster and itinerary.

Use Learn with Objects Seaside holidays 14: charabanc and Seaside holidays 15: Zeeland as starting points to investigate seaside excursions from Folkestone, by charabanc, coach or train to other sites in Kent; or across the Channel to Flushing, Calais or Boulogne.

Search online too, to find out where excursions went to from Folkestone, and the places they visited.

Investigate the different types of transport, adverts, posters and itineraries, then create your own exciting excursion poster and itinerary inspired by what you’ve seen.

Design a poster and itinerary

Children can design a poster and itinerary for an excursion from Folkestone, either on a charabanc to nearby places of interest, or a cross-channel trip to the Continent.

Think about what to include to make it look and sound really exciting, and to beat off the competition.

Children report back about their excursions, sharing their posters and itineraries, and taking their classmates on a virtual trip out. Don’t forget your packed lunch!
