Children undertake online research to explore WW1 and Folkestone's role in the war and then create a newspaper report from the period with sepia photographs and/or illustrations.

Children can explore content on the Learn with Objects WW1 topic and report back on what they’ve discovered. Next, they research examples of WW1 illustrated newspapers on line before writing a WW1 style newspaper report on their chosen subject.

Illustrated newspaper report

Children look at WW1 copies of War Illustrated, the Illustrated London News or The Graphic on line for inspiration.

Inspired by what they’ve seen, they compile an illustrated WW1 newspaper report about their chosen subject.

To provide focus pupils can be allocated specific subjects to find out about. Examples from Folkestone could include:

What was life like as a soldier?
Women on the home front?
Belgian refugees
Canadian soldiers
Chinese Labour Corps

Pupils may copy photos from the Learn with Objects WW1 topic pages to illustrate their article (changing them to black and white or sepia for period authenticity) or draw their own illustrations.
