This is a baby’s gas mask.
In World War 2 there was a great fear that poison gas would be dropped on Britain, so everyone had to carry a gas mask.
Babies had a special one, that they were placed inside, with a special pump to keep the air flowing.
Adults and children had to wear them too, and at school gas mask drill was a daily event.
Young children were given red and blue Mickey Mouse gas masks, which were meant to make them seem less frightening to wear.
Thankfully poison gas was never dropped on Britain.

The sound made by the valve of a Mickey Mouse gas mask was similar to someone breaking wind. No wonder children found it hard to keep a straight face during gas mask drill!
