In WW2 food was in short supply because German submarines called U-boats were sinking many of the ships bringing it to Britain.
Important foods including meat, eggs, cheese, butter and sugar were rationed, meaning everyone had to make do with a smaller amount.
Everyone was issued with a ration book, full of coupons, which were exchanged for the rationed items when they went shopping.
People were also encouraged to Dig for Victory - to help the war effort by growing their own fruit and vegetables, either in their gardens or on allotments.
Children were expected to help as well as adults.
This plan sets out how a family can grow all the vegetables it needs on a 30 x 10 metre plot.
