WW2 activity 10: What makes a hero or heroine?

Heroes and heroines may have fought in action, like Battle of Britain pilots, Royal Navy sailors or Gurkha soldiers. They may be civilian heroes like Folkestone’s George Cross winners, or have volunteered for dangerous work as female ambulance drivers or Air Raid Wardens.

Heroes might be members of children’s families, or from their own communities. They can be men, women or children.

Children investigate the qualities of heroism, then investigate heroes and heroines from WW2 using the Learning with Objects WW2 topic and other sources.

Pupils explore the concept of heroism, and celebrate their heroes and heroines in poems, short films, creative writing, art, sculpture or through a mixed-media exhibition including some or all the above.
