WW1 activity 6: the great air raid on Folkestone

Learning objectives

Increased knowledge and understanding of WW1 Home Front, air raids, and the bombing of Tontine Street. Increased confidence in creating and acting in a short piece of drama.

Introduction

Children learn about the raid and its tragic consequences, and discuss some of the questions raised at the inquest.

• How it was allowed to happen?
• Why wasn’t Folkestone defended from attack?
• Why was there no warning?

Role play: The great air raid
Children develop the introduction through role play, with small groups developing and acting out the following scenes:

Scene 1: A busy day shopping in Tontine Street.
Scene 2: A visit to the cinema.
Scene 3: Silver birds - the Gotha bombers are spotted.
Scene 4: The bombs fall. Stokes Shop destroyed. People lie dead and injured.
Scene 5: Searching for survivors, Helping the wounded, taking them to hospital.
Scene 6: Funerals for the dead, attended by large crowds
