Learning objectives

Increased knowledge and understanding of the important part played by people from around the world, including black and minority ethnic communities in WW1.

Curriculum links

KS1-4 History (WW1)

KS1-2 Art and Design (art project inspired by contribution of BAME communities in WW1)

KS1-2 English (poetry, drama or creative writing project inspired by contribution of BAME communities in WW1)

Children use Learn with Objects to investigate the important contribution made by people from around the world in WW1 including Canadian soldiers, the Gurkhas and the Chinese Labour Corps.

This is also a great starting point to investigate the contributions of other BAME communities in the First World War including soldiers from Africa, India and the Caribbean.

Children can also explore the important contributions of BAME servicemen born in the UK such as Walter Tull.

There is rich local content here for a school thinking of planning activities for Black History Month, or at any time during the year as part of Black History 365.

Help from around the world

Children can research the different countries and peoples who passed through Folkestone and create art, music, creative writing or poetry inspired by the valuable contribution Britain received from its allies around the world during WW1.

Countries include:

• Nepal (the Gurkhas)
• South Africa
• Canada & USA
• Australia and New Zealand
• India
• China (Chinese Labour Corp)
